School Visits

School visits are fun. I do both large and small group presentations. My large group presentations include a PowerPoint and a discussion of the behind-the-scenes life of an author, how ideas become stories, and the stages a book goes through before it's ready for the library shelves. My writers' workshops focus upon how young writers can develop their own characters, settings and plots. Helping students to become more confident writers is one of my primary goals.

It often works well to start with a large group presentation for all of the students, and then have one or more writers’ workshops for a smaller number of students. Workshops can either be arranged by selecting a grade level to participate, or by having interested students request the opportunity to be in a workshop.

Fees: I have not raised my fee for the 2009-2010 school year. For visits that do not involve an overnight, the one-day fee is $1350. For visits that do involve an overnight (requiring that I be away from my writing and family for a longer period, and covering the cost of an overnight accommodations), the fee is $1450. The fee for a 2-day visit is $2500, for visits not involving an overnight, and $2600 for visits requiring an overnight stay. The fee for three days is $3800.00.

Additionally, if more than one school in a district books a visit, each school will receive a hundred dollar discount. (That would be $1350.00 for one school and $1250.00 per school if two or more schools schedule visits.)

As both writer and former school librarian, I know first-hand how meaningful it can be for students to have an opportunity to interact with an author. I hope that by making my visits more affordable, the literary experiences may continue.

Other Author Appearances

I enjoy speaking to groups of every variety: teachers, librarians, aspiring writers, PTA/PTO groups, clubs ...

The presentations are tailored for each occasion and audience.  Generally, I am asked to speak about writing for children and teens, about writing for publication, and about encouraging others in their writing efforts.
